Garfield Township is located in the western part of Mackinac County along Lake Michigan. Historically, the township has been popular for its natural resources (i.e., commercial fishing, lumbering and agriculture). The township has a Great Lakes Shoreland District along Lake Michigan which recognizes the fragile ecosystem in the coastal area, while at the same time permitting residential and recreational development and limiting other uses that are compatible with the area.

Regulation meets the following Key Measures:

4

Limits development/redevelopment along the shoreline.

The township has two different sets of requirements to limit development along shorelines. There is one for inland lakes that establishes minimum setbacks.
Zoning Ordinance Article 4, Section 4.14
A Great Lakes Shoreland District is also identified in the zoning ordinance in two sections. The general regulations section incorporates setbacks from the Lake Michigan shoreline and identifies the Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM) as the documented high water level from which to measure setbacks.
Zoning Ordinance Article 8, Section 4.01
